Class Schedule : Our next class is scheduled for Saturday, August 29th, 2009. Class will begin promptly at 10am. |
Class Description : Class will cover everything you need to know to begin creating your own carved concrete planters. Anyone who has ever carved a jack-o-lantern for halloween create a beautiful planter. And once you have mastered the basic skills and understand the procedures, you will be able to create unique, one of a kind planters that will last a lifetime. Class starts with a tour of the studio, showing various carved planters, water features, and sculpture that have been created using the wet carved technique. After the tour, a brief description of the process will be provided. Then students will mix their own batches of concrete, and pour them into the molds. While the concrete is setting up, a demonstration of carving techniques will be presented. This will also include a description of tools, and tool making process. At this time, a healthy lunch will be served. When the students concrete is ready, the molds can be removed, and carving can begin. Students will receive personalized advice on design, technique, and process as they proceed to carve their planters. Carving can last as long as the individual students design requires, but normally lasts 2-3 hours. Once carving is complete, the pieces are left to dry and harden. They can be picked up the next day at the studio. |
What you need to bring: All materials necessary for the class will be provided to the students. A set of basic carving tools will be provided to each student, and these are yours to keep. Safety equipment will also be provided, including dust masks, and rubber gloves. Concrete carving can be a messy process, so wear some old clothes. Since standing in one place can be tiring, wear comfortable shoes. Other than that, bring only your imagination. |
